Born in Bournemouth on May 29th 1949, Stevie spent the first 6 years of his life growing up in Egypt where his father was serving in the army. Back in the UK and, after an uninspiring schooling, he began as a shop boy for Currys where he worked for 5 years before becoming a van driver for a bakery. Stevie’s hobby was skating in Bournemouth ice rink to a background of record requests played by a young lady whose presentation was awful. “I could do better than that” Stevie told the manager who promptly gave him a go. He got the job, and that was the beginning. An advertisement in Melody Maker offered DJs disco and nightclub work in Scandinavia, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland and Austria. A demo was mailed, and almost by return post a contract arrived for two weeks work in Denmark. That was another beginning! Stevie enjoyed continuous gigs in Denmark and Norway, West Germany as it then was, Switzerland and Austria. However, radio work fascinated Stevie who from Denmark sent a demo to UBN. He was accepted, but to his surprise, was offered a job not on the biscuit factory station but in the Middle East on the Voice Of Peace. That was in September 1975, and the following year the Peace Ship’s now senior presenter became firm friends with Kelvin O’Shea who was taking a break from Caroline. Briefly back in Denmark a phone call from a secret address in London sent Stevie south to Dunkirk for his first tender ride to the Mi Amigo. The period between 1976 and 1980 was unforgettable. Besides presenting on Radio Caroline, Stevie was using his shore leave at the time of the disco boom to DJ in a large nightclub. It was the best of both worlds. Unfortunately, the Ambassadeur was a little too wild and in the autumn of 1979 the police moved in. Then the following March the Mi Amigo was lost, and suddenly both gigs were gone. It was time to try something new. Robbie Dale and Chris Carey were interested in the Irish radio scene and, a couple of weeks after leaving the VOP, Stevie was asked to meet Chris at Heathrow for a trip to Dublin. Life in Ireland looked promising until the Sunday morning when Stevie drove Robbie’s hire car off the road nearly killing himself in the process! That hiccup in his career took Stevie back to Denmark and then Germany and Austria before returning to Norway. Marriage followed, and there was a new home to be built in Furnes just north of Hamar where there was another Radio job. A chance meeting with Sietse Brouwer got Stevie into the Dutch owned Caroline Cable Network which became Radio Seagull where for over 20 years he served as Programme Director before returning to Caroline. more
