Herpes is caused by the Varicella-zoster virus (VZV), a strain of the herpes simplex 1 virus. This is a very common virus but rarely causes outbreaks. Herpes outbreaks are typically caused by cold sores, fever, and muscle aches or pains. Herpes outbreaks can occur in any part of your body, but the most common area is the lip, inside of your mouth, or on and around the anus. Herpes outbreaks are more common in people who are susceptible, but they can occur in anyone.
It is possible for an individual with Herpes to have outbreaks that last for days or even weeks. The virus is contagious and spreads from person to person through direct contact. However, if you or someone else has been positively tested and does have Herpes, the outbreaks usually clear up without treatment within about six weeks. Most outbreaks last anywhere from two weeks to two months. During this time, you may still have blisters and soreness, but they should not be painful. If the virus does not go away without treatment, then your doctor may prescribe a cream or ointment to be applied directly to the sores.
