Hey guys:
I found the discussion in this Podcast very interesting. Sadly, and you depicted this, facts matter ONLY when you agree with them. “Our notion to spank is so pervasive. If it was good enough for our parents, many feel, then it is good enough for me.” I think many times we do things simply because it was passed down, without much thought about analysis of that thing, until or unless attention is called to it, such as is in the case of Adrian Peterson. Sometimes it takes analytical thinkers, such as yourselves to bring this discussion to the forefront. I believe, if we had been shown a better way to get the desired result, we would embrace it – that is, those of us who are not stuck in a time capsule or are just too self righteous to look at the FACTS.
I personally wish that I had been shown a better way. But Carolyn said it best. You are just so frustrated with the behavior and you see no way of getting that message out than to take it out on that person’s hide. But, isn’t that just what happened in Ferguson? The citizens there are just so very frustrated, they themselves a product of spanking, that they felt so frustrated and helpless that they felt the need to destroy businesses, neighborhoods etc., to make their voices heard.
I used to watch this show religiously called Nanny 911. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen that show but the nanny would come into the home of these frustrated parents whose kids were so unruly that you, as an outsider looking in, could never see an out for that family. The nanny, as it turned out had to educate the parents and the children to be a force working together as a family unit before she could get the family on sound footing. It was and EXCELLent show. The nanny did it WITHOUT spanking the children. She showed how it could be done in such a way where the respect of the child was always paramount but the child was disciplined in such a way that it was effective. Through this measure the children learned to communicate – that is what is lacking in our society today – the ART of COMMUNICATION. Thank you for a wonderful Podcast. I hope people listening will research better ways of discipline. Nanny 911 and other nanny shows are good references on which to build.

Hi Carolyn, Julian, I enjoyed ur Topic. //I am disgusted by any 'human' who is so lazy and abusive that they will decisively and obstinantly Use Spanking to achieve potty training. Absolutely. Absurd. Disturbing. Blacks are essentially mimicking their former slave masters. //BTW, Adrien Peterson's case became so disturbing bc of the MARKS Wounds left on a 4 yr old's body. So, to defend Charles Barkley is beyond a word to use, and to Criminalize the Prosecuting atty in the Adrien Peterson case is the Twilight Zone. sad. sad. sad. However, u tried to look at the science. So, at least u'r trying to overlook cultural problems and look at the Violence of the issue.
