Academic Word of the Day: infer
|
|
‘Infer’ is a fairly formal way of saying ‘guess’ (or form an opinion) based on some evidence. So we use it when we talk about the results of research, but also in every day life when we decide on the meaning of signs, gestures or any kind of behaviour we see or hear. The expression 'draw an inference' is like 'make a guess', but it's more formal and also suggests that you have some evidence to base your interpretation on.
