I grew up listening to Reggae, but I didn't really appreciate it until I spent the summer of '86 in London, England.
My older cousin and my Uncle living in London were passionate about their music. My uncle's friend even had a pirate radio station broadcast from inside his flat. That summer, I attended the biggest Caribbean Carnival, I ever have attended. In Notting Hill. My cousins had a sound system right out front on the sidewalk blaring the sleng teng riddim... but there were sound systems everywhere for blocks and blocks throughout the city on that day. I also learned about toasting and sound clashes for the first time. Saxon sound was the big sound at the time and Coxsone sound....
By the time I returned to Florida, I had collected loads of tapes of English based Reggae artists like Papa Levi, Smiley Culture, Nitty Gritty, and Sugar Minott. I grew up in S. Florida and over the last 25 years, I've been to many dancehalls and some sound clashes in S. Florida and in Jamaica. I've seen some Soundsystems like Stone Love, Renaissance, Poison Dart, Metromedia, Tony Matterhorn and King Waggy Tee in Miami.

In the 90's my younger brother loved the dancehall more than anyone I know and he would bring home mixtapes of soundclashes with Killamanjaro, Bass Odyssey, Black Kat, Rodigan(UK), Black Chiney, and many others, and he would keep me up to date on new artists, that he knew, would "bust" soon....artists like Sizzla, Jah Cure, Jah Mason, and Bushman. These "Sounds" promote new artists and new music long before they reach the mainstream. My goal is to do the same. Well, it's been a year now and I have had over 21,000 downloads worldwide. Thanks for the support!
