Darren Tyquin is the Racing Announcer for Horse Racing in the greater Canterbury area in New Zealand.
Prior to taking up his Christchurch based role, Darren worked for TRAC which is a consortium of five clubs in the Waikato and Bay Of Plenty in the North Island of New Zealand. Darren started in this position in September of 1999 and has fast developed into one of New Zealand's most popular Announcers.
Originally from Melbourne, Australia, Darren has an impressive racecalling record to his credit having called Thoroughbred, Harness and Greyhound Racing over a twenty year period in Australia and New Zealand.
As a youngster Darren would spend each Saturday listening to the best in the business from around Australia, names that are legend today. Bill Collins, John Russell, Joe Brown, John Tapp and Ron Papps. These men had the ability to vividly convey to a radio audience with great accuracy all of the color and drama of a race day. Darren was hooked and at an early age decided that Racecalling was his destiny.
In 1982 Darren commenced calling Provincial Greyhound and Harness meetings under the guidance of 3UZ Racing Manager Nancy Helmore and Announcer Ron Papps who both played vital roles in shaping his career and instilling a strong desire for accuracy and perfection. He quickly progressed to the No 3 position at the Station behind Veteran Announcer John Russell and Television Personality Peter Donegan. After a few short months in the position he was honored with the 1983 Pater Award for Best New Talent in Australian Radio.
Darren is also a presenter for the recently launched Radio Trackside, a popular Voice Over Announcer for both Radio and Television, having recorded advertisements for Sunbeam, New Zealand Racing, Family Television Network and Classic Hits.
