I am a speaker for RAINN, a wonderful non-profit organization. "RAINN provides support for sexual assault victims and their loved ones through two hotlines at 800.656.HOPE and online.rainn.org. Whether you are more comfortable on the telephone or online, RAINN has services that can guide you in your recovery."
As an active member of the RAINN Speaker's Bureau, it has been my honor to get to know dozens of other RAINN Speakers as well as several of those who work at RAINN. "The RAINN Speakers Bureau educates and informs the public about sexual violence. Members will have the opportunity to share their personal stories with students, communities, victim service groups and/or the media. We know that it’s difficult to share something so personal, but we believe that your survival story can inspire others who may be victims of sexual assault to come forward for the first time and receive the help they need. In the process, we hope the experience will benefit you, as well, by sharing the struggle you went through to overcome what happened."
I realized that these were not only strong survivors of some of the most horrific acts that could be imagined; these survivors are truly strong, everyday heroes. They were being overlooked and not counted as heroes. They survived trauma that most will never encounter nor will most people ever think about the true impact of such horrible consequences upon a survivor's life and the lives of those that they know.
Please note, however, that we are not qualified to provide online counseling. If you have been sexually assaulted and are seeking help or support, please call RAINN the Rape, Abuse & Incest National Network toll free at 1-800-656-HOPE (4673). They are on call 24 hours a day to provide confidential support to survivors. If you feel you are in immediate danger please call 911.
