PERSONAL LIFE
(born 6th, November, 1982) as a child growing up in Kingston, Jamaica, was introduced by the radio in his grandparent’s home to the dulcet tones of the original radio disc jockey Barry G. Through this medium, AJ learned the history and importance of reggae and dancehall music.
His family supported his passion for music, even as a teen, and his cousin who still operates a sound system in Canada, often brought AJ records to add to his growing collection. As a high school graduation gift, his parents gave him two turntables and a mixer, which AJ felt was a better investment than the four years of piano lessons he was made to do as a child.
AJ left Jamaica and moved with Florida with his family, where there was an active party scene for high school and college-aged teens, and AJ was often hired to play at a series of warehouse parties.
While most artistes have a turning point in their lives that turn them to music, AJ always knew that music was an industry he needed to be involved in. Once again, the radio played its part as AJ listened to the pirate radio stations in Florida, because at the time there was a lack of reggae and dancehall music being played on the mainstream radio stations and internet radio had not yet taken off.
He was introduced to DJ Livity who at the time played with the Prestige Sound, and was affiliated with but not employed to the sound for almost two years. Selecta AJ took this time to network and make valuable connection in the industry, and to hone his skills as a DJ.
In 2000, he enrolled in Florida International University (FIU) and started working with the college radio station Radiate 88FM, where he stayed for four years and eventually became a production director. The station had the then highest rated college reggae show. Also in that year, AJ teamed up with DJ Whitty Don, and DJ Cal El, who formed the sound system and DJ-group The Deportees.
2000 also saw Selecta AJ creating his first official mixed tape, and because of popularity of internet bootlegging his mixes became popular. AJ considers his first released mixed tape homage to the original mixed cassettes that were popular in Jamaica in the 90s.
Professional by day and disc jockey by night, AJ plays regular events in Florida and is available for bookings (e-mail: Selectahaj@gmail.com or cell: 954-243-5269). Selecta AJ hosts a weekly show at: http://selaj.podomatic.com/
