Write Your Own
Craig Mckellar has been DJ'ing for 20 years, mainly in the GLBT community along Sydney's infamous Oxford Street.
I have also played in the UK between the periods of 1990 - 1993.
My passion for music comes from, like all DJ's, my soul - but also my working career not behind the decks, having worked in music retail for 18 years.
Seeing music formats change from cassettes to vinyl, Sony MiniDisc, compact discs, lasor discs to MP3 to wav & digital.
Digital is such a brilliant format, it has made music so easy for everybody to access. The way it should be.
With music sharing such a great tool, my DJ'ing style has changed so many times over the years due to so many different overseas & fantantastic homegrown Australian DJ/producders.
I was first introduced to dance music through the camp clubs of Oxford Street, listening to everything from Petula Clarke to Paul Lekasis & euro disco.
From there I started to listen to Hip Hop. Then came Hip House....... DJ Fast Eddie, Mr Lee, Doug Lazy, Tony Scott.... The hip house period in this country was Australia's version of the U.K's summer of love. With U.K & their raves, Australia was introduced to moving away from night clubs & going to huge dance parties in warehouses with massive lighting & soundrigs.
This was also the time the DJ became a 'superstar' with international DJ's touring the country.
After Hip House, I started to play good solid club music, such a great time before dance music crossed over from underground & was plastered accross the radio.
Then as DJ's we were forced to look harder for tracks that didn't make that cross over & keep dance music underground & not turn into Technotronic!
While still playing house, & living in the U.K I started to also play around with drum & bass, put my little finger into the happy hardcore pie....(scary!) & U.K rave & trance.
Progressive house then led me into early tribal & tech-house.
I now concentrate on playing tribal house, dirty tech house & minimal tech. Drawing influences from Eric Entrena, D-Unity, Javier Media, DJ Dextro, Filthy Rich, Saeed Younan, Hugo Rizzo, DJ Chus, Peter Bailey, D:Formation, Cytric, That Kid Chris, Oscar L, Lula, Danny Tenaglia, Coqui Selection, Leomeo......I could keep on typing for ages, but that would be pointless - as long as music is digital, my list will be forever changing & that it something I look forward to as my DJ'ing style changes with it.
Being a DJ is such a great job, the rush that you get from controlling a dancefloor is a very powerful & exciting rush.
There are so many DJ's in the scene at the moment, but my advise is if you have the urge, feel you have the right stuff to do it....... go for it!
The more of us the better!
Enjoy my music & the other 100's of DJ's that are here on Podomatic.
