BIOGRAPHY
Andrew Mckay's obsession with records and DJing started in the 80s, inspired by the movie Beat Street. He started spinning hip Hop and Soul records on public radio in 1988, in Hobart, Australia, and got his first set of turntables in 1990.
In the winter of 1997-98 he fulfilled a lifelong dream and spent 4 months in New York City, where he immersed himself in the DJing culture. Working in Manhattan at EMI Music Publishing by day, going to clubs by night, lurking in record stores and devouring every street DJ mixtape he could get his hands on, Andrew had a chance to observe and learn from many great DJs during this time.
Upon returning from New York, Andrew started working as a club DJ, as well as doing weekly turntable mixes on the seminal Australian Hip-Hop radio show "Ghetto Blast". He was soon busy playing weekly hip hop and R'n'B nights as well as guest spots at clubs around town, at a time when this genre of music was just starting to break through to the mainstream. With his
large record collection and good DJing sense, he was soon able to attract a decent following, moving to bigger and bigger clubs, at one point playing eleven gigs in one week!
In 1999, Andrew did a 1-year full-time sound production course at TAFE (a technical college), in order to become a more well-rounded audio professional.
During this period, he played support spots for top international DJs, including DJ CRAZE (World DMC Champion), DJ DEXTA (Aussie DMC Champion and world finalist), DJ VIN ROC (ITF World Champion DJ); he also spun at the BEASTIE BOYS AFTER-PARTY, played specialty music nights during US Navy warship visits, produced and sold several mixtapes and more...
In mid-2000, Andrew decided to make a change and spend some time living, working and travelling in Asia. Getting out and seeing the world was great, but DJing was becoming quite lifestyle-cramping. Buying (and carrying) enough imported vinyl records to remain competitive with the new breed of CD-playing DJs was no longer viable, and in 2003 he decided to take a break for awhile, only DJing on occasional trips back Down Under.
In 2009, now based in Singapore, Andrew has returned to DJing in full force! He has found a new sound, based on a blend of
House, Soul, Jazz and Latin influences, and his music has been well-received at a number of venues around Singapore, including One Rochester, Blujaz, Mel's Place, Myra's Beach Club, the American Club and more.
