A Los Angeles native, Alan seemed to absorb music even before his first words were uttered. Both of his parents enjoyed singing, which helped provide the environment at home for a family-wide interest in music. Raised in this environment, it soon become apparent that Alan possessed a natural passion for music. His siblings would conceal record labels and instruct him to “fetch” a particular selection, and to their amazement, young Alan would correctly retrieve them. He even remembers pleasure in observing his cousin practice piano lessons, dreaming that one day it would be him practicing piano! Just prior to his 9th birthday, the opportunity to learn piano became a reality, and although his initial experiences with instructors did not result in success, eventually a piano teacher by the name of Raymond Walls came into his life and subsequently mentored a young Bentley. Walls performed such complicated jazz delights as the likes of legendary Eubie Blake, quickly earning Alan’s undivided respect and role as his first “Musical Mentor”.
In Jr. High School, Alan continued his musical path when he joined the band, adding trumpet to his list of talents. Upon entering High School, he expanded even further with the tuba in the marching band and orchestra, while his love of music expanded with the desire to DJ. He began hosting his own “house parties”, earning him the exposure and serious recognition as a DJ. His popularity increased rapidly and soon colleges, like UC Irvine, Fresno State, Cal State Long Beach, Cal Poly Pomona, and Cal State Northridge, began debuting the talents of this “KID DJ”.
After graduating High School, Alan went to college then decided to serve in the US ARMY. Upon his return to civilian life, he gained employment with a major motion picture marketing research firm while going back to attend college at night, studying Film and Television Production. If that wasn’t enough, he returned to hosting parties which attracted interest from the serious club scene, out of which came consistent bookings on the weekend.
