Richard Jones has been djing longer than he dares to remember. Luckily the clubbers of Brighton and beyond do remember his djing exploits and are most appreciative. Mr Jones (or missus as he’s known to his fellow Wild Fruit dj’s) is a Brighton institution, gracing more decks at more venues than probably any other dj on the block. Not bad for a lighting jockey got lucky. “The dj walked out in the middle of a Saturday night and I took over”. And he’s been taking over the dancefloors ever since.
A session at a Brighton Pride party for Wild Fruit was all the club needed as proof that Jones should come onboard the fruity ship and soon he was enjoying a residency at Sunday Sundae at Bar Centro. Jones was soon rocking the biggest parties it Koochy, Tease, Gaydar Day, Moosic Asylum, Religion, Kinky Dangerous, Rebel, Nightingales, Bolts, Hippodrome, The Embassy and the Beacon Royal with resident status now secured at Sunday Sundae, Wild Fruit, Cabin Fever, Shine and Brighton’s newest night Anthem.
Jones is one proud crowd-pleasing dj. Where there’s a Dik there’s a party, especially as far as Wild Fruit or Sunday Sundae is concerned. “I love a good song, I mainly play uplifting funky tunes which are recognisable, along with a smattering of crowd pleasing dance classics. I don’t pretend to be cool, it’s about the people on the dancefloor not about my personal taste. I do a few nights in town and I like to think my music style travels well. Sunday Sundae is about more chilled out funky stuff and classics whilst my other nights may see me step up a gear.” And he’ll always be first in the queue to acknowledge the wonder of the clubs he plays for. “Fruit and Sundae are all about the people, the atmosphere and the music.”
For Richard Jones it’s all about the love he feels for djing. “It was my living for many years, then I had a break and missed it terribly so I started djing again after moving to Brighton from Nottingham. Djing is my real passion, after all there are not many hobbies this good you actually you get paid for!” Yes if there was ever a dj who was worth his weight in gold its our Mr Jones. The parties of our lives would simply not be the same without him. Long may he play.
