I guess it all started in what was once called the discothèque, where I was weened on bass lines and a hi-hats. It was there that I fell in love with flashing lights, enormous sound systems, and the party peoples that made it happen. I was amazed how the DJ could keep the momentum going and how he knew what to throw on next. I never had the opportunity to make friends with someone to practice with, but life eventually took its course and it wasn't until recently (some 30 years later) that I was able to take it more seriously by enrolling in classes at Dubspot and Scratch Academy in NYC. I had also joined a DJ collective, where I learned what can't be taught in schools. In the meantime, I've been acquiring some awesome tracks and equipment for... I ♥ DJ porn!
The DJ experience is quite different than it was 10 or even 5 years ago and I'm fortunate enough that I didn't have to carry tons of vinyl around or cases of burned CDs. Much of the art has gone digital, but I don't see it as closing doors, but rather opening them. The options and possibilities are now endless as I've begun this journey as technology and the art of DJing is going through a renaissance.
It can be maddening at times, but the secret to it all is to practice and love what you do! Appreciate the people that support you and always be grateful to D-I-S-C-O, for without it, there wouldn't be House! ♥
