Having DJ’d on the Birmingham circuit for the last 3 years, Jayson Wynter’s is starting to build a bit of a reputation for himself as a Soulful House DJ & Promoter. ‘Mr Wynters’, as he is affectionately known on the scene, first dipped his toe into the DJ’ing world at one of many house parties that were regularly thrown at his God Brothers House. Having always had a passion for music, Jayson started playing mainly RnB and Neo Soul cuts, as this was the crowd that was to be catered for at the house parties. So, using the CD decks provided by his God Brother, Jayson set about honing his Dj’ing skills in order to satisfy another burning ambition. Jayson’s Dj’ing journey, funnily enough, started on a train journey back in 2005, where the Soulful sounds of Kerri Chandler’s ‘In the Morning’ feat. Monique Bingham, filtered through his earphones sending him into a state of Hypnosis. He chuckles to himself as he recalls the amount of times he repeated the song on that journey, each replay elevating him to new levels of Soulful heaven. So it was probably no coincidence that the very first Soulful House CD that Jayson purchased was the Soul Heaven double cd, mixed by DJ Spen & Osunlade. To this very day, this is the CD that Jayson still considers as his personal favourite, out of all the Soul Heaven CD’s. “There's a healthy variation of different types of house fused into 1 compilation, with deep house, tribal house and the soulful side of house and this educated me to appreciate various forms of house music as a result .” Jayson enthuses. As well as the sheer enjoyment that Jayson felt when listening to Soulful House, he didn’t know any other music genre that had the energy to keep him dancing continuously for hours on end. He discovered this new found stamina when attending a night called ‘Days Like This’, which was held in a small intimate bar called Red, located in the heart of Birmingham City Centre. This is where Jayson was introduced to some of the heavyweight’s in the game such as Karizma, Spen, Alix Alverez, and Yass, just to mention a few. Jayson himself takes a lot of his inspiration from the likes of Dennis Ferrer, Kerri Chandler, Karizma, Yoruba Soul, Bodhi Satva, Osunlade, Masters @ Work, AtJazz, Aarron, Ross, DJ Spinna, Blaze, and Terry Hunter. Jayson’s love affair with the deck’s hasn’t stopped him from displaying his many other talents. He has also been involved in promoting a few night’s as well. Jayson explains, “’Back n Forth’ was a concept I came up with about a year ago, inspired by Alliyah’s debut single ‘Back and Forth’ . The title explains how I wanted the event to run in terms of playing some old skool tunes with a little bit of the up to date tunes (most of which are influenced by the original classics). This way we bring the crowd back and forth between genres.” Another night Jayson has been involved in recently is SOULfisticated. “This is strictly a Neo Soul night, that also incorporates Soulful House into the mix. We wanted to put on a night for the Neo Soul heads as there wasn’t anything else in Birmingham catering for them. The most recent event that Jayson has been involved in promoting was the Adidas Party. “This night concentrates on the old skool era playing no up to date music at all. We had break dancers clashing one another and everyone dressed in Adidas from head to toe.” Not being content with simply perfecting his Dj’ing skills, and Promoting some of the more innovative club night’s in Birmingham, Jayson is also looking to test his hand at producing and remixing songs in the very near future, to try and satisfy his gluttonous passion for music. “Music has always been an important part of my life, for as far back as I can remember, it was all around me. My dad plays the Bass Guitar, and my mother use to play in a steel band,” explains Jayson. Jayson himself initially followed in his mother’s footsteps, playing steel pan in a youth steel band, whilst studying music at school during his early teens. He also took up the drums for a short stint, so it is no surprise that Jayson has quite an eclectic taste in music, due to his diverse musical background as a youth. As he continues to explore his passion of House Music, Jayson constantly finds himself networking and collaborating with other House heads in the field, as he feels this is a great way to get a feel for what is out there. So from, being mesmerised by some of the Heavyweights on the Soulful House scene, you can expect Jayson, to be headlining with them in the near future if all goes to plan.more
