Iya Isoke Harrisburg, PA Iya Isoke (Ee-eye-ah Ee-so-kee),
Poet Laureate for the City of Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (2002-2006), quickly emerged as an outspoken voice of the African American and minority community. Her mantra is "language is a code, use it, or be used by it.
At age 16 while visiting out of town Iya was held captive and repeatedly raped. Iya talks about the cloud of secrecy and shame embedded in families and how this leads to the fear of speaking out and reaching out for help. She also speaks on the benefits of counseling, and breaking the cycle of “airing out dirty laundry”when it is time to seek help. A survivor of sexual assault, Iya also believes in therapy through creative writing. She uses her gift as a Spoken Word Artist to facilitate much needed conversations within families and the community.
