<title>Looking for some advice on USB microphones</title>
<description>Just picked up a laptop running Vista. Thinking about purchasing a USB headset. The guys in the stores are no help so I'd thought I'd turn to you guys. I had a couple of concerns...

Will a USB mic be as smooth as an analog mic or am I going to have to deal with the choppy starts and stops? Almost like noise cancelling circuitry whose threshold is set a bit too high... I'm hoping I'll get more control over my sound, but I still want the comfort that using a headset in live applications offers...

Any advice, opinions?

Also, if you're familiar with the mixer utility in Vista, I'm wondering if I plug two of these things in if I'll get two separate mixer channels popping up.

Thanks,

<description>What gave you the idea that the plug you use changes the way a mic works? You have a choice of interface, 1/4-inch, mini-plug or USB ... many models of microphone come with choices and/or conversion devices.
A USB mic is likely to offer a better result than an identical mic with another interface. Why? Less "interference" from the connection itself. That "hum" you hear? Those "clicks"? That "buzz"? Often just the connection. USB is nearly always crystal clear.
As for Vista ... good luck with it.

<description>you know if I hadn't already had my materials from earlier (MUCH earlier) days I would have opted for the BEHRINGER PODCASTUDIO bundle. This retails for 149 but i have seen it as cheap as 99 dollar US. This has Mic, mixer, headphones and software and all plugs into the usb. Behringer is a good name and for the the cost, you can not beat it.
